Still deciding on whether to take IELTS on paper or IELTS on computer?

Choosing the most suitable option can make you feel more comfortable and confident in taking your IELTS test. 

To give you more information, we have put together some frequently asked questions about the features and format of IELTS on computer. Click on each question below to reveal the answer.

A: IELTS on computer and IELTS on paper are practically the same in terms of content and marking.  The difference would be the delivery of the test (on paper or computer) and the features available for each format. Otherwise, question types & assessment criteria are exactly the same for both. 

A: Yes, test takers will be provided with pen/pencil and paper for note-taking during the test. However, you will be asked to leave the used paper after the test. 

A: In IELTS on computer, you will be typing your answers directly on the test questions page on the computer, so there is no need for transfer time.  You will be given 2 minutes to check your answers at the end of the test.

A: The British Council has developed a  full sample version of the IELTS on computer test to help test takers. This aims to familiarise test takers of  the features and format of the IELTS on computer test. A: There is no need for a 'save' or 'submit' button on the IELTS on computer screen.  All answers are automatically saved as you go through the entire test. Similarly, the screen automatically ends the test when the time is up.  

A: Some test takers find it more convenient to take the test on computer because of their familiarity in using the computer in their work or study.  Ultimately, the option to take the test on computer or paper depends on the test takers' preference.

A: Compared to the IELTS on paper test, the IELTS on computer test is less crowded. Fewer people take the test at one time, however, there are more test sessions to choose from.

A: While the test is taken through a computer, it will still be delivered in an authorised testing venue where security measures are in place.

A: Similar to the IELTS on paper test, you only get to listen to the recording once.

A: Yes, you may view other parts of the test within the same section (Listening, Reading, and Writing). There is a navigation bar at the bottom of the screen which allows you to check other parts and questions within the same subtest.

A: Yes, the IELTS on computer screen includes features like highlighting and note-taking. Other standard functions like, click and drag, copy and paste (CTRL+C and CTRL+V) are also available.

A: No, there is no need for you to remove any highlights or notes you have made during the test. These do not affect your score in the IELTS on computer test.

A: One of the benefits of taking IELTS on computer is the availability of the word count function.  In IELTS on computer, there is no need for you to manually count the words in the Writing test, unlike in the IELTS on paper test.

A: After completing the test, you are not allowed to leave the room earlier than the rest. Since everybody will be starting the test at the same time, all computers will end and close the screen simultaneously.

A: Although some features of the IELTS on computer screen are similar to other computer software, it does not include grammar and spell check.

A: Some locations may provide both IELTS on paper and IELTS on computer test, but not all.  Please check availability of IELTS on computer in your preferred location from you test centre.
