Covid-19 updates for test takers

At the British Council, the health and safety of our staff, customers and the communities in which we operate is our top priority. Thank you for working with us as we follow the advice of the health authorities and government in our response to the spread of Covid-19 in Vietnam.

Following the social distancing extension order by the Vietnamese government on 15 April 2020, seeking to protect public health and safety from the Covid-19 pandemic, the British Council in Vietnam has suspended all exams, including IELTS, until 22 April 2020. Please click below for more details of these.

For general information on Covid-19 in respect to studying in the UK and UK qualifications please see here.

For more information or assistance, please contact our customer services team at or, or call our free hotline at 1800 1299.

The current situation for IELTS is that tests before 22 April 2020 are cancelled.

Re-scheduling and refunds

IELTS Test takers whose tests have been cancelled until 22 April 2020 can now choose to either;

  • re-schedule their test date by up to three months; or
  • take a full refund

Affected test takers will be contacted for further instruction of re-scheduling and refund details by British Council.

We have made the following exceptions for test takers who can request to re-schedule their test date or take a full refund (without administration fee deduction)

  • are currently in a country or place that would face quarantine on arrival in Vietnam, and are therefore are unable to travel to Vietnam for the test
  • are under 14-day compulsory quarantine order, 14-day medical surveillance or other self-quarantine order, as required by the Vietnam government
  • have a high temperature, persistent cough, difficulty breathing or other flu-like symptoms.

If any of the above apply to you, please make a request by completing the 'Test date rescheduling and refund' form.

On the form, select ‘Other’ and indicate ‘Covid-19’ in the ‘Grounds for Application’ section. E-mail the form to or We will send a confirmation within five working days.

Note: The final date to defer your test, withdraw your application or apply for grading was Friday 24 April 2020. Requests made from now up to 1 May 2020 will be considered only on a case by case basis. After 1 May 2020 the session system will be closed and no further amendments can be made.

Cambridge International announced on 23 March that all May/June 2020 exams are cancelled globally. This includes Cambridge IGCSE, Cambridge O Level, Cambridge International AS & A Level, Cambridge AICE Diploma and Cambridge Pre-U. Cambridge UK GCSE and A level qualifications are also cancelled.
